Is Social Media Ruining Our Lives By: Marielle Monarres

The famous TLC show, “Toddlers and Tiaras” shares how girls from ages 3+ compete in beauty, physical, and “talent”. Moms from all over the United States come together to compete for money and fame. According to Common Sense Media, the main focus for these kids is to win tiaras and look good. Setting a high expectation for little girls. This is why social media is bad and distracting. First, the education comes second in student’s mind, and then social media creates more isolation. Lastly, once your life is on any social media site your life is no longer private.

Students tend to focus more on social media than school. According to Social Networking, it states “Students who used social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while nonusers had an average GPA of 3.82.” What this means, is that kids who have or use social media spent more time on Twitter, Instagram, etc. than their actual homework. For example, grades have gone down because of social media. As well as teachers taking away phones during school hours. Also, a study about a school who banned cell phones proved that when the cell phones were taken away the students were more focused and the grades grew.

Isolation and cyberbullying can be created by social media. According to Social Networking, it states “Social media can exacerbate feelings of disconnect.” What this means, is that kids who use social media are more likely to feel disconnected with family and friends. For example, middle and high school students have twice the chance of committing suicide. Also, 21.3% of females and males have admitted to cyberbullying.

Social media displays all of the information that one might post on any social media site. According to Social Networking, it states “81% of people surveyed feel ‘not very’ or ‘not at all’ secure when using social media sites to share private information.” What this means is that people feel insecure when they publish something. For example, people might comment hurtful messages making the person who posted the post feel incompetent. To elaborate, most people might not even know that they could change the Facebook settings.

Although social media is unacceptable, other people might contradict. According to Social Caffeine, it states “Social Media can Help Make Friends.” What this means, is that people who have the same interests can meet online and become really good friends. For Example, elderly folks in Chicago are video chatting teens in Brazil helping them learn English. To add, some of the best friendships are made online.

To Conclude, social media is very effective to today’s generation. “Toddlers and Tiaras” (the show I had mentioned earlier) is a great example why. The people and crowd that watch shows like these are trying to be convinced that unless you are stick fit or have flawless skin that society will never except you. Which is nothing but lies. People should have the ability to wear and like things without the fear of everyone judging them. So, next time you are about to add a comment to someone’s post, post something negative, or just, in general, be rude know that you might hurt certain people.
